ACTIVITIES

Author : Prabhu

Grade : GRADE 5

Subject : Biology

Objective

To develop and use an edible model of a cell to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function.

Theme

To create an edible model of a cell, to demonstrate how different candies, fruits and goodies can be used as analogies to the structure and function of organelles.

Activity

Science at RaKs is always hands on learning with a lot of creativity, critical thinking , collaboration and fun. Students create an edible model of a cell using candy as they connect the structure of the candy to the structure and function of cell organelles.Studying animal and plant cells is a wonderful way for students to understand life at its most basic level. No matter how complex or simple the organism, all plants and animals are made up of cells – from the microscopic single celled paramecium to the hundreds of billions of skin, bone, nerve and muscle cells that make up you.Yet when viewing cells under a microscope, or looking at slides or pictures, it may be difficult to grasp that a cell is a three dimensional unit capable of carrying out all of life processes all on its own. All cells have the ability to metabolize food for energy, respond to the environment as well as grow and reproduce.Building a cell model not only clarifies this concept for students but also provides hands on learning of a cell’s individual components, their functions and how they work together as a system.Students of Grade 5, created an edible model of a cell, as they show how different candies, fruits and goodies can be used as analogies to the structure and function of organelles! With trigger questions and prompts from the teacher, the boys and girls worked in two teams with one team putting together a plant cell and the other creating an animal cell. The challenge here is to choose the right kind of candy/ goody to match the descriptive nature of the parts of a cell like the nucleus, chloroplast, ribosomes to name a few. Before they ate the edible cell cake, students had to explain their reasons for the choices of goodies they made in their model. When they explained their models, for each piece of candy they also explained how the structure of the candy and the organelle is similar and how the structure relates to the function. Objective: of developing and using a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function was achieved . More so this activity brought out the 4 C’s of a 21st century learning environment - CREATIVITY, CRITICAL THINKING , COMMUNICATION & COLLABORATION to its BEST..#21stcenturylearning# #handsonscience# #projectbasedlearning# #rakspallikkoodam#
